This chapter provides an overview of how the camera works under various conditions, as well as an introduction to the software interface that picamera uses. Many questions I receive regarding picamera are based on misunderstandings of how the camera works. This chapter attempts to correct those misunderstandings and gives the reader a basic description of the operation of the camera. Mobile phone digital cameras differ from larger, more expensive, cameras DSLRs in a few respects.
When the camera needs to capture an image, it reads out pixels from the sensor a row at a time rather than capturing all pixel values at once. The major difference is that a DSLR will have a physical shutter that covers the sensor.
The notion that the camera is effectively idle until we tell it to capture a frame is also misleading. Think of it as a video camera. Specifically one that, as soon as it is initialized, is constantly streaming frames or rather rows of frames down the ribbon cable to the Pi for processing. This background processing is why most of the picamera example scripts seen in prior chapters include a sleep 2 line after initializing the camera.
The sleep 2 statement pauses your script for a couple of seconds. What does the camera sensor actually detect? It detects photon counts; the more photons that hit the sensor elements, the more those elements increment their counters.
In fact we can only perform two operations on the sensor: reset a row of elements, or read a row of elements. Whilst resetting that line, light is still falling on all the other elements so they increment by The second line of data is reset this time some sensor element states change. All other elements increment by 1. Now the camera starts reading and resetting. The first line is read and the fourth line is reset:. At this point, the camera can start resetting the first line again while continuing to read the remaining lines from the sensor:.
Our first frame is now complete:. At this stage, Frame 1 would be sent off for post-processing and Frame 2 would be read into a new buffer:. There are naturally limits to the minimum exposure time: reading out a line of elements must take a certain minimum time.
For example, if there are rows on our hypothetical sensor, and reading each row takes a minimum of 20ns then it will take a minimum of to read a full frame. This is the minimum exposure time of our hypothetical sensor. The framerate is the number of frames the camera can capture per second.
Depending on the time it takes to capture one frame, the exposure time, we can only capture so many frames in a specific amount of time.S lj
For example, if it takes 10ms to read a full frame, then we cannot capture more than frames in a second. Hence the maximum framerate of our hypothetical row sensor is fps. This can be expressed in the word equation: from which we can see the inverse relationship. The lower the minimum exposure time, the larger the maximum framerate and vice versa.
To maximise the exposure time we need to capture as few frames as possible per second, i. The minimum framerate is largely determined by how slow the sensor can be made to read lines at the hardware level this is down to the size of registers for holding things like line read-out times.
This can be expressed in the word equation:.The following recipes should be reasonably accessible to Python programmers of all skill levels.
Please feel free to suggest enhancements or additional recipes. Capturing an image to a file is as simple as specifying the name of the file as the output of whatever capture method you require:. Note that files opened by picamera as in the case above will be flushed and closed so that when the capture method returns, the data should be accessible to other processes. BytesIO stream, an existing open file object, etc. Note that the format is explicitly specified in the case above. However, if the object has a flush method, this will be called prior to capture returning.
This should ensure that once capture returns the data is accessible to other processes although the object still needs to be closed:. As well as using stream classes built into Python like BytesIO you can also construct your own custom outputs.

Sometimes, particularly in scripts which will perform some sort of analysis or processing on images, you may wish to capture smaller images than the current resolution of the camera. This can be done with the resize parameter of the capture methods:. You may wish to capture a sequence of images all of which look the same in terms of brightness, color, and contrast this can be useful in timelapse photography, for example. Various attributes need to be used in order to ensure consistency across multiple shots.
It can be difficult to know what appropriate values might be for these attributes. For isoa simple rule of thumb is that and are reasonable values for daytime, while and are better for low light. With this method, the camera captures images continually until you tell it to stop.
Images are automatically given unique names and you can easily control the delay between captures. The following example shows how to capture images with a 5 minute delay between each shot:. However, you may wish to capture images at a particular time, say at the start of every hour. This simply requires a refinement of the delay in the loop the datetime module is slightly easier to use for calculating dates and times; this example also demonstrates the timestamp template in the captured filenames :.
The primary objective is to set a high gain, and a long exposure time to allow the camera to gather as much light as possible.The subject is a bit dry, so I will give you the summary upfront. These figures were obtained with my HQ module at room temperature and the raspistill — -raw -r command:.
A raw converter can later subtract the Black Level from raw data as needed to align zero DN with no light on sensor. The Black Level figure is usually dependent on the environment and setup of the sensor. I could not find it in the HQ Camera Maker Notes or in optical black pixels but it is easy to estimate by taking a raw capture with the lens cap on in a dark environment. Below is the histogram of the center crop of a dark field taken at room temperature with analog gain equal to 1, the minimum available.
The Black Level is the mean value of the black field crop, which in this case computes to Here it looks typical for base gain, obviously the Black Level offset was not exactly centered on a DN. It almost never is. As the gain is raised the Black Level creeps up but you can tell that the sensor designers are able to compensate, about a quarter of an LSB per step, attempting to keep it within a limited range.
With my module at room temperature that range was about Increasing it reduces Dynamic Range but it also has the potential to reduce input-referred Read Noise, an important determinant of Image Quality in the deep shadows.
It is typically accomplished via Progammable Gain Amplifiers these days, which tend to be quite linear. I was however curious to check whether the analog gain switch in raspistill - ag had one-to-one correspondence with actual sensor output. Taking captures of an LED at varying shutter speeds verified that this is indeed the case with the IMX as you can see below:. This shows that when we tell raspistill to increase gain from a value of 1 to anywhere up to 16, its maximum working range, we physically get what we ask for.
Note that the linear fit suggests that if one expected to use gains uniformly throughout the range, a good generic Black Level for the purpose would unsurprisingly be By the way, with the HQ camera we are not constrained to whole numbers for gain, but we can also use intermediate values like 2. If this plot looks a little different than how it is usually seen elsewhere as a function of ISO stops, it is because I left it linear for ease of reading values off the curve. The fact that the standard deviation of the captures does not, say, double when gain is doubled means that raising analog amplification favors cleaner electronics in the earlier part of the chain, thus reducing input-referred noise in physical units of photoelectrons e. This effectively takes a small number of photos behind the scenes to work out the appropriate transmogrifications that are applied to yield the jpg image.

I thought that the initial preview time was to do all of that settling down stuff. Normally thats 5s but if you use the -t option then you can set it to another time in ms.
If I go too short with then then I get weird colours. But I have found 1s ok using the -t option. So in these cases its booting and getting that settling time all done within those times. So I hear what your saying and agree there is some setup time but I dont think its that which is adding a second on each time to the total shoot time for each additional 0.

If you're increasing the shutter time, you're increasing the frame time, so there are fewer frames within your -t startup delay. Run with -ss and you'll get 1 frame through before you've requested your capture. Second thing to say as I've put on here many times is that the first frame out after starting streaming on of the majority of sensors is corrupt, or at least not totally trustworthy for statistical analysis.
That means that on starting we have to wait ms to receive an unusable frame, and then another ms to get 1 usable viewfinder frame we always complete frames that have been requested. The sensor then gets stopped, reprogrammed for a stills capture, and started. First frame out is invalid, and then capture frame ms later. There's setup on top of that - I can't put a number on that off the top of my head, but probably 0.

The resolution and framerate parameters can be used to specify an initial resolution and framerate. If specified, resolution must be a tuple of width, heightand framerate must be a rational value integer, float, fraction, etc. This defaults to 0 indicating that the sensor mode should be selected automatically based on the requested resolution and framerate. The possible values for this parameter, along with a description of the heuristic used with the default can be found in the Camera Modes section.

Please refer to the documentation for that method for further information. We attempt to determine the filename of the output object and derive a MIME type from the extension.
If output has no filename, an error is raised. The general idea here is that the capture still port operates on its own, while the video port is always connected to a splitter component, so requests for a video port also have to specify which splitter port they want to use.
